Classic cars join NASCAR schedule for Roval weekend

Some iconic cars from NASCAR history will take on Charlotte Motor Speedway this October as part of a busy playoff weekend.

According to a press release from CMS, the Historic Sportscar Racing NASCAR Classic presented by Petty's Garage will join the weekend schedule with events on Oct. 11-12. Classic cars from NASCAR history will compete on track with period-accurate schemes and numbers.

"What better way to spice up NASCAR's wildcard weekend than to bring some throwback race cars and put them on the Roval this October," said Charlotte Motor Speedway President Greg Walter in a statement.

"Fans will love seeing some of the old-school paint schemes at Charlotte again and we're proud to host Historic Sportscar Racing for the first time. It's yet another reason we are America's Home for Racing."

To be eligible for the competition, these cars must meet previous NASCAR Rule Book specifications for Cup, Xfinity, Truck, and ARCA competition. Gen 7 cars and other modern vehicles will not be allowed to compete.

A maximum number of 30 classic cars will be selected for each round of the HSR NASCAR Classic. The full schedule will be released at a later date.

The HSR Historic Stock Cars division has featured some iconic looks made famous by numerous drivers. Ward Burton's No. 22 Dodge, Rusty Wallace's No. 2 Dodge, Marcos Ambrose's No. 9 Ford, and Reed Sorenson's No. 41 Dodge are only some examples.

The Wonder Bread/Fig Newtons Chevrolet from "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" has also hit the track.

"The across-the-board support for and the rapid growth of the HSR Classic Stock Cars category made starting a dedicated series around the division an easy decision," said HSR President Chris Ward in a statement.

"NASCAR stock cars of all generations are perhaps the most identifiable category of race cars in the U.S. to motorsports enthusiasts, competitors, and even mainstream audiences. We have experienced this incredible growth and popularity with several HSR Historic Stock Cars showcase events in the last few years, particularly in partnership with the HSCRA (Historic Stock Car Racing Association)."

The HSR NASCAR Classic -- previously known as HSR Historic Stock Cars -- previously competed at Watkins Glen International while supporting the national NASCAR series races. This will happen once again this season as the classic cars take on the road course on Sept. 13-14.

The HSR NASCAR Classic marks the first time that the series has competed at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
