Chicago Street Race construction begins ahead of NASCAR return

The work has officially begun in Chicago as NASCAR prepares for its race weekend in July.

The crews began shutting down streets on Monday, June 10, so that they could start construction on the 2.140-mile road course where Xfinity and Cup Series teams will compete on July 6-7. The first street to close, according to the NASCAR-provided guides, was Ida B. Wells Dr. between Michigan Ave. and Columbus Dr.

The work will continue on Tuesday, June 19, and Wednesday, June 20. The crews will install the jersey wall overnight on northbound Michigan Ave. between Congress Circle and Jackson Dr. This work will begin at 9 p.m. on June 19.

The crews will then begin the installation of the Michigan Reserved seating structure on Michigan Ave. between Congress Circle and Jackson Blvd.

The next road to close as part of the construction process will be Jackson Dr. between Michigan and Columbus. This closure will take place on June 27. The work will only ramp up from there as the race weekend draws closer.
