The McLaren P1 is now available to consumers in a brand-new form courtesy of LEGO Group.
McLaren Automotive and LEGO announced this week the creation of the LEGO Technic McLaren P1. This 1:8 scale set features 3,893 pieces and several details taken from the full-size hypercar.
The LEGO Technic McLaren P1 features a seven-speed gearbox with two shifter drums, a V8 piston engine, an adjustable rear wing, and opening dihedral doors with advanced mechanisms. This collector set measures 5.5 in. (14 cm) high, 23 in. (59 cm) long, and 9.5 in. (25 cm) wide.
"It's amazing to see so many of the elements from the original P1 brought to life by the LEGO team for the LEGO Technic McLaren P1," said Tobias Sühlmann, chief design officer at McLaren Automotive.
"I hope this collaboration inspires the next generation of designers and engineers to push the boundaries of automotive innovation."
The set will be available on http://www.LEGO.com/McLaren and at LEGO Stores starting on Aug. 1. The price will be $449.99.
According to LEGO Group Designer Kasper Rene Hansen, recreating the hypercar was no simple feat. There were multiple details that had to be perfect to for the LEGO Technic set, including the interior. However, one specific detail was harder to recreate.
"We also faced a huge challenge with the iconic butterfly doors because they needed a new mechanism to stay open," Hansen said in a statement. "
It was a great experience to recreate the McLaren P1 and I'm hoping all supercar enthusiasts out there are ready to explore the details and intricacies of the real McLaren P1 in LEGO Technic form."
The McLaren P1 is the latest addition to a special lineup of sets highlighting luxury cars. The LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept Series also includes such examples as the Ferrari Daytona SP3 ($449.99), Audi RS Q e-tron ($179.99), Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance ($219.99), and the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 ($49.99).
Formula 1 is not the only motorsports series with a LEGO Technic set. Last year, NASCAR partnered with the LEGO Group to release a Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 celebrating the 75th anniversary of the NASCAR Cup Series.
