The three suspects being sought in the attempted burglary/near home invasion of NASCAR legend Richard Childress were apparently carrying some serious firepower when the tried to break into this North Carolina home, authorities told Alt-Driver.
Sheriff David Grice said that, based on the surveillance video at Childress' home, one suspect appeared to be carrying a "a rifle, sort of an AR-type rifle with 25-30 round magazine," a shotgun and a handgun. The suspects, in newly released photos, were covered head to toe and authorities can only see their eyes.
He said based on what he's seen so far, "this gives us great concern it was an attempted home invasion."
A press release referred to the weapons as "military style."
The sheriff said he hopes the $50,o00 award announced today will help lead to the suspects.
Childless, the NASCAR Hall of Famer, was home with his wife Sunday night when he heard a window break. He grabbed his handgun and went to investigate. He opened the front door, fired three shots, and the intruders fled. None of the men actually made their way into Childress' home.

On 12-17-2017, three subjects armed with military type weapons attempted to break into the residence of Richard Childress. The Davidson County Sheriff's Office is attempting to identify these three individuals. These subjects were all wearing black clothing consistent with hoodies and covered faces. All three subjects appear to be wearing glasses of some kind. Friends of Mr. Childress have increased the reward to $50,000.00 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of these individuals. The Davidson County Sheriff's Office will be distributing photos of these subjects to local and national news outlets as well as social media. The Sheriff's Office urges these individuals to turn themselves in to the Davidson County Sheriff's Office to avoid any further incidents.
