A Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix rider was killed during the race on Saturday.

31-year-old Daniel Hegarty crashed on the 6th lap of the race at a spot known as Fisherman's Bend. The British rider hit the barriers outside the circuit and lost his helmet, motorsport.com reports.

Race officials brought out the red flag and eventually called the race once it was learned how serious Hegarty's injuries were. He was transported to a nearby hospital but died in route.

"The Macau Grand Prix Committee extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Daniel," read a statement released by race organizers.

This was only Hegarty's 2nd time competing in the Macau Motorcycle GP.
