Most drivers wouldn't complain about a season in which they picked up three victories and finished fourth in the points standings, but then again not everybody speaks their mind quite the same way as Brad Keselowski.
Frustrated much of the season due to the perception the Toyota stock cars had an unfair downforce advantage, Keselowski spoke up before the race at Chicagoland Speedway a few months ago. He essentially said that no manufacture had this big of an advantage over the rest of its NASCAR competition in 40 years.
Now, after finishing seventh at Homestead and consequentially missing out on his second Cup Series title, Keselowski is back to his usual antics of criticizing the Toyota teams.
"When that car rolled out at Daytona, and I think we all got to see it for the first time, I think there (were) two reactions: One, we couldn't believe NASCAR approved it; and two, we were impressed by the design team over there," Keselowski said, according to NBC Sports. "I don't think anyone ever had a shot this year the second that thing got put on the racetrack and approved. It kind of felt like Formula 1, where you had one car that made it through the gates heads and tails above everyone, and your hands are tied because you're not allowed to do anything to the cars in those categories that NASCAR approves to really catch up."
Toyota redesigned its Camry stock car this year to coincide with the released of the all-new Camry sedan. Following this, Chevrolet announced it would be switching from Chevy SS stock cars to Camaro ZL1 models for 2018. This redesign should bring increased downforce to Chevrolet race teams.
Lost in the mix is Ford, which happens to be brand that Keselowski drives for in the Cup Series. The company released the new Fusion race car a few years ago, but could be at a disadvantage again in 2018 if it brings the same body style back to Daytona. There have been rumors that Ford could switch to Mustang bodies next year in the Cup Series, but Keselowski doesn't seem optimistic that rumor will come to fruition.
