You don't have to be living truly "off the grid" to appreciate a personal invention like this. When you think about it, the mechanics behind it are simple: a basic which that operates off a pulley system and torque should easily work and this one certainly does! There's obviously a danger when it comes to using rope here - you can even hear it getting tighter and tighter - so it might be better to replicate this with actual tow cables or straps but the idea works just as easily. Check out this guy's technique. It might take forever but you never know if you find yourself needing a winch when there isn't one nearby!
