Honda made big news earlier this year when it revealed its 2018 Odyssey minivan, but even though this model features an all-new design, it still comes with the same reputation for safety as it predecessor.
This was proven this month when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) bestowed it's top honor of Top Safety Pick+ upon the redesigned Honda Odyssey.
In order to become an IIHS Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the best possible rating in each of the agency's five tests that evaluate an automobile's crashworthiness. Those tests are the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints, and small overlap front. In addition, to earn the additional "+" rating, a vehicle must earn at least an advanced score when it comes to its front crash prevention capabilities, as well as an acceptable rating in the agency's new headlight evaluation.
The 2018 Odyssey becomes just the second minivan to earn Top Safety Pick+ honors this year, joining the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica. The 2017 Kia Sorento was also named an IIHS Top Safety Pick, but fell short of "+" status because its headlights were rated as poor in the headlight tests.
The optional LED headlights for the Odyssey helped this van earn an acceptable rating in that area of testing. Acceptable is the second-highest rating the IIHS currently gives in that category.
The new Odyssey joins other Honda models such as the HR-V, Pilot, and Accord as 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award winners.
