Auto manufacturers are in Detroit this week showing off the latest and greatest in cars, trucks, and SUVs. It might not be too long before we see a different kind of auto getting all the attention.

Navigant Research has just released its leaderboard report showing which companies are making the best progress in developing self-driving vehicles. The Navigant Autonomous Driving Leaderboard has GM at the top of the list, reports thedrive.com, with Waymo coming in second.

GM was cited for making significant progress in technology and developing a self-driving car, plus steps toward making the car available to the public. Waymo has the edge in operation with a pilot autonomous ride-sharing program being conducted in Arizona right now, while GM hopes to launch their self-driving car with no manual controls sometime in 2019.

Navigant divides its leaderboard into four categories: Leaders, Contenders, Challengers, and Followers. Joining GM and Waymo in the Leaders category are Ford, Daimler, Renault-Nissan, BMW, Aptiv, and Volkswagen. Toyota, Volvo, Jaguar, and Hyundai are some of the names in the Contenders category. Honda, Tesla, Uber, and Apple find themselves in the Challengers category. There were no manufacturers in the Followers category.
