Chase Briscoe continues career-best season with Iowa finish

Chase Briscoe reached another career milestone on Sunday at Iowa Speedway while continuing his career-best Cup Series season.

The Indiana native crossed the finish line second overall behind William Byron, who saved an extra 34 laps of fuel. this finish marked Briscoe's 11th top-10 finish of the season and his ninth top-five.

His previous best marks with Stewart-Haas Racing were 10 top-10s and six top-fives in 2022, the season he scored his first career win.

Briscoe's average finish after 23 races is 13.7. This far surpasses his previous career-best mark of 17.3, which he set in 2022 while finishing ninth in the championship standings.

While Briscoe continues to set career-best marks, especially during qualifying with six pole wins, he isn't fully satisfied. He entered the season knowing that he needed to win in the best equipment of his career, but he has missed out on multiple occasions.

Briscoe's three runner-up finishes in the past four weeks is a testament to this fact.

"Sonoma we were just -- nobody had anything for SVG (Shane van Gisbergen), and then Dover I definitely felt like I could have eventually won that one if I was a little more aggressive, and then today I felt like I was kind of the second best there at the end," Briscoe said after Sunday's race.

"Even if it was another five laps, I was probably going to run fourth. I just kind of died there at the end of the run.

"I don't know, we've been in position enough, running second like that, you're going to end up winning some of them. It just hasn't went our way the last three or four of them, so hopefully next week it'll be that way."

Despite missing out on multiple wins, Briscoe remains poised to earn more playoff points as the end of the regular season approaches.

He left Iowa Speedway sitting eighth in the Cup Series standings. The top 10 drivers at the end of the regular season get a decreasing number of bonus playoff points. This would certainly benefit Briscoe considering that he currently has seven playoff points from one race win and two stage wins.
