Steve Newmark will leave his role of team president at RFK Racing to head up to Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
According to a press release, Newmark will join the University of North Carolina's Department of Athletics. He will take on the role of Executive Associate Athletic Director. He will initially focus on "strategies tied to revenue-driving initiatives" related to UNC Football and Basketball programs.
Newmark will then transition to the Director of Athletics role in the summer of 2026 as current Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham transitions to Senior Advisor to the Chancellor and Athletic Director.
Newmark, a former attorney, joined RFK Racing in 2010 as the SVP of business operations. He transitioned into his role as president in December 2010, and he has remained in this role ever since.
He was part of the group that worked to create the charter system, NASCAR's version of franchises, and he served as a liaison between teams and the sanctioning body over the years. He was also part of the four-member negotiating committee that represented all teams during charter discussions the last few years.
"I've been incredibly fortunate to work alongside so many amazing people at RFK Racing over the past 15 years," Newmark said in a statement. "It has been a true privilege to learn from -- and represent -- Jack Roush and John Henry, and the entire Roush and Fenway organizations.
"And I firmly believe the RFK team is in a great spot and poised for tremendous success both on and off the track in the years ahead."
Grateful for a wonderful ride at @RFKracing and looking forward to going back to Blue Heaven and being part of an amazing academic institution and storied athletics department. @GoHeels pic.twitter.com/I686nt8Pow

RFK Racing responded to Newmark's departure with a statement on social media thanking him for his contributions to the team.
"RFK Racing extends its deepest gratitude to Steve Newmark for his remarkable leadership, vision, and steadfast dedication over the past 15 years. Steve has been instrumental in shaping the culture, growth, and success of our organization and his impact will be felt well into the future.
"While we are saddened to see him step away from his role as President later this Summer, we fully support his decision and are grateful he will remain engaged through the transition. We wish Steve continued success at the University of North Carolina, and we look forward to building on the strong foundation he's provided."
