Ex-F1 driver joins Meyer Shank Racing for IndyCar test

Meyer Shank Racing will bring in ex-Formula 1 driver Logan Sargeant for a test this fall.

Sargeant will complete his first laps in an IndyCar entry in November at The Thermal Club in Thermal, California. This private facility will host the second event of the 2025 NTT IndyCar Series season.

Racer first reported the news on Monday and then Meyer Shank Racing confirmed it on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Sargeant, 23, made his Formula 1 debut in 2023 for Williams Racing. He posted an average finish of 15.8 with season-best finishes of 11th at Silverstone and Interlagos. He also had seven DNFs due to crashes, an illness, and mechanical failures.

However, this season also marked a milestone for Sargeant. He became the first American driver in 30 years to score points in F1. He achieved this in a unique fashion.

Sargeant originally crossed the finish line 12th overall at Circuit of the Americas on Oct. 22, 2023. However, Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc were disqualified after the race for technical infringement. This moved the Williams Racing driver up to 10th and locked up one point.

Sargeant returned to Williams Racing at the start of the 2024 season. He started 14 of the first 15 Grands Prix and posted an average finish of 17.1 with two DNFs. His best finish was 11th at Silverstone.

Williams cut ties with Sargeant after the Dutch Grand Prix and replaced him with Formula 2 driver Franco Colapinto. The Bueno Aires native has since made three starts. He has finished 12th, eighth, and 11th.

Sargeant will now have an opportunity to test out a different style of open-wheel race car, and it follows a pivotal trip to Nashville Superspeedway.

According to Racer, Sargeant spent time at the NTT IndyCar Series finale meeting with teams. One of these meetings was with Meyer Shank Racing, who extended the offer of an IndyCar test.

Meyer Shank Racing, which agreed to a technical alliance with Chip Ganassi Racing, does not have any openings in its two chartered entries. However, the test will still provide Sargeant with an opportunity to showcase his driving abilities for other IndyCar organizations.
