Atlanta Cup playoff race results: Joey Logano wins

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Joey Logano is moving on to the Round of 12 after winning Sunday's playoff opener at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The Connecticut native won for the second time at Atlanta after a late battle in overtime with defending track winner Daniel Suarez.

A caution for multiple cars wrecking ended the race. Logano had taken the white flag, so he won the race while Suarez was credited with a runner-up finish. The rest of the top five were Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, and Alex Bowman.

Ty Gibbs was in control of the race during the final stage, and it appeared that he would win his first Cup Series race as he continued to battle with Suarez. However, the caution flew for a Walmart sign that fell onto the track surface. This forced the drivers to line back up for a late restart.

Logano took the lead while Gibbs fell back through the field, but the Team Penske driver did not cruise to the victory. An incident involving Harrison Burton and Noah Gragson then sent the race to overtime.

The final restart featured pairs of teammates lining up together. Blaney lined up behind Logano while Chastain was behind Suarez. Once the green flag flew, the two pairs of teammates began working together with big pushes.

The advantage went to Logano. Blaney was able to stick on his bumper while Chastain faded a little at the end. He could not continue pushing.

Stage 1: A stunning crash involving Kyle Larson and Chase Briscoe brought out the caution at the end of the stage. Ryan Blaney was in the lead, and he locked up a playoff point. Austin Cindric, Alex Bowman, Joey Logano, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Ross Chastain, Chase Elliott, William Byron, Martin Truex Jr., and Ty Gibbs were all in the top 10.

Playoff drivers Harrison Burton (11th), Daniel Suarez (15th), Tyler Reddick (17th), Christopher Bell (20th), Brad Keselowski (23rd), and Denny Hamlin (32nd) missed out on stage points.

Notable: Blaney and Cindric tied with 19 stage points each, the most in the field. Both drivers scored a playoff point. Bowman was third with 16 stage points on the day.
