Shane van Gisbergen moving up to Cup for 2025 season

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Shane van Gisbergen will take on the next level of competition next season as he moves up to the Cup Series full-time during the 2025 season.

He will drive for Trackhouse Racing as the team expands to three cars and he will work with teammates Daniel Suarez and Ross Chastain.

Trackhouse Racing announced the move Saturday evening at Daytona International Speedway. The team also revealed that van Gisbergen will drive the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro during his rookie season in 2025.

This is no small detail considering that several drivers such as Dale Earnhardt Jr., Darrell Waltrip, Dale Jarrett, Donnie Allison, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, and Buddy Baker have taken it to victory lane a combined 76 times.

"This is what I have planned for and I am ready," van Gisbergen said in a statement. "I know there is a tough learning curve ahead, but the best way to learn is to go out and do it.

"I feel I have made progress running the Xfinity Series this year with Kaulig Racing and I can't thank everyone there enough. I look forward to the Cup Series. Those drivers and teams are the best in the world and it will be an honor to be part of their races."

Stephen Doran, a championship-winning engineer with Stewart-Haas Racing, will lead the effort as the crew chief for the No. 88 team in 2025. Doran is in his first year as a crew chief. He leads the No. 71 team at Spire Motorsports.

SVG has already achieved success in the NASCAR Cup Series with limited opportunities. He won his first-ever NASCAR race on the streets of Chicago and then he finished 10th in his second Cup race, which took place on the Indianapolis road course.

A significant announcement on Friday afternoon paved the way for this move. Trackhouse Racing issued a statement and said that the team and driver Zane Smith would mutually part ways after the 2024 season. Smith had originally joined Trackhouse Racing ahead of the season on a long-term deal.
