Shane van Gisbergen adds Cup races to 2024 schedule

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Shane van Gisbergen continues to expand his racing schedule with the addition of two Cup Series events.

The three-time Supercars champion will now compete in the Cup events at Darlington Raceway (Sept. 1) and Atlanta Motor Speedway (Sept. 8) after adding Acceptance Insurance to his lineup of sponsors. He will drive the No. 16 Chevrolet Camaro for Kaulig Racing in both events.

"I was told when I came to the States that Darlington was the toughest track on the circuit, and I can't dispute that, but I immediately fell in love with the place," van Gisbergen said in a statement.

"It is just so much fun to drive and I am keen to drive a Cup car there. As for Atlanta, we finished third there in only my second Xfinity series start, so that was kind of crazy. I have so much more experience now and I just love getting to the track each week."

Adding these two events to the schedule means that van Gisbergen will now compete in seven of the remaining 12 Cup Series races.

Van Gisbergen will compete in Saturday night's Cup race at Daytona. He will follow with trips to Darlington and Atlanta. Van Gisbergen's schedule also includes trips to Watkins Glen on Sept. 15, Talladega on Oct. 6, Las Vegas on Oct. 20, and Martinsville on Nov. 3.

Van Gisbergen, who competes full-time in the Xfinity Series, has made four Cup stars for Kaulig Racing this season. He drove the No. 16 at Circuit of the Americas in March, Talladega in April, Charlotte in May, and Chicago in July.

He led nine laps on the streets of Chicago while defending his win from last season, but he finished last after contact from Chase Briscoe sent him into the wall.

"This season has been a lot of learning for me, but I've enjoyed every moment of it," van Gisbergen said. "It's super fun to be competing for a NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship and getting a shot at racing in the Cup series against the best of the best.

"To me, the road courses are a regular race, but the ovals are a challenge, one I am hoping to conquer soon. I'm looking forward to this second half of the season."
