It's that time of the year when the kids are begging to go outside to play in the snow! As much as we love giving little ones the opportunity to enjoy a good ol' snow day, we can only truly enjoy it if they're prepared for freezing temperatures. Along with many other snow day essentials, they need kids' snow pants.

Snow pants are not your regular winter pants (AKA sweatpants). These pants are lined with special material to keep your kids warm and cozy. As someone who gets cold easily, I know firsthand not wearing the correct winter outerwear can lead to constricted blood flow or frostbite!

Here are the best pants for sledding, snowboarding, snowball fights, and even school.

When to Buy Snow Pants on Sale

Many outdoor and winter apparel brands begin to mark down clothing during Black Friday. Now, winter enthusiasts will argue and say those aren't even the best sales.

The Krazy Coupon Lady says REI is generous from January through March. Her findings were based on a sale last year, however, it's typical for brands to mark down clothing around the same time each year.

She also recommended shopping Macy's Last Act clearance section in February for The North Face and Columbia apparel.

Are you a bit surprised? Most may think it's time to shop in the summer. That may be true, but if you'd like a head start before people begin bundling up in fall and winter, shopping now through March sounds like a great idea.

Best Kids' Pants for Snow Days

Best Unisex Pant

1. Columbia Kids' Cypress Brook II Pant

Columbia's pants come in black and navy blue. These unisex pants have an elastic waistband and are adjustable for the best fit!

Parents, you'll be able to machine wash these snow pants after a snow day. These are perfect for kids who hate bib snow pants and snowsuits. Once little kids figure out how much warmer these are than leggings and sweatpants, they're going to wonder how they have made it through winter without them.

The pants feature a seam-sealed waterproof construction with a stain-resistant exterior. (Perfect for kids.) Another feature that we love for children is the velcro side pockets. They'll be able to keep their phone or whatever playtime essential they need with them.

Best for Camo Lovers

2. Amazon Essentials Boys' Water-Resistant Snow Bibs

These snow bibs are perfect for little boys who love camo! The one-piece might not be a favorite if kids are only used to boys' snow pants, however, the style might help little ones appreciate cozy bibs.

There's another camo pattern to choose from, along with a few other colors. The $31 toddler boys' bibs are machine washable and water-resistant, making them perfect for snowy and rainy days.

Best Fit for Teens (Girls)

3. Roxy Backyard Insulated Snowboard Pant Girls

These little girl snow pants are from Roxy, one of my favorite clothing brands as a kid. The toddler girls' pants are available in 8-16 year-old-fits.

The pants feature ROXY DryFlight technology for better waterproofing and have a flattering waistline and relaxed leg for movement. (The kids won't complain about these pants feeling bulky.)

Best for Skiing (Girls)

4. Obermeyer Girls' Snoverall Pants (Toddler/Little Big Kids)

I am obsessed with the color options to choose from! These pants are perfect for trips to Colorado. They're water-resistant and have a built-in technology to increase the cuff length by two inches allowing for re-use in your family. With the ability to lengthen, your child can probably wear these for a few winters!

The handwarmer pockets and top-notch insulation are also a plus. My only con is that they're not machine washable.

Best Machine Washable Bib (Girls)

5. ZeroXposur Girls Snow Bib Water Repellent Insulated Kids Ski Pants

These snow bib overalls are similar to the option above. However, you can put these kids' snow bibs in the washing machine! They have an elastic waistband and adjustable straps for comfort and the perfect fit. Not only are they easy to put on and adjust, but they're also easy to take off.

No one likes bulky winter gear that's tough to get out of! They're also water-resistant and highly insulated. I recommend making water-resistant and water-repellent activewear part of your winter apparel checklist.

Water-resistant and windproof clothing is the key to staying dry from ice and rain!
