If there’s a thesis at the core of Elon Musk’s grand vision for Tesla’s massive Gigafactory project out in the Nevada desert, it is this: “Batteries are critical to sustainable energy. The sun doesn’t shine all the time, so you’ve gotta store it in a battery.” With their strides toward the Powerwall home battery system, and their expansion of Tesla’s electric cars to more and more markets domestically and globally, Musk is right. The world will need more batteries, and the aim of the Gigafactory is to develop not only better, more capacious, and more efficient storage solutions in battery technology, but also to further improve existing solar cell technology for our coming future.
