Former CEO of the Santa Clara Blind Center Steve Mahan is legally blind. Driving has long been something which remains out of his grasp and ability, but his inability to see is what made him the perfect candidate to take Google’s new “Waymo” self-driving vehicle on a field test trial run. The car’s sensor arrays and software are state-of-the-art and have been rigorously tested to manage four-way stops, construction spots, pedestrians, and even stop and go highway traffic. But thanks to Texas’ lenient laws on self-driving cars, Google was able to give Mahan a ride and prove the Waymo’s capabilities in one fell swoop. Below, see Google/Alphabet’s own announcement of their achievements.
