If you went to Wildwood, New Jersey’s sandy beaches on a hot weekend in the summer, you may think you’d stepped backward in time, seeing the sand teeming with vintage mid-century hot-rods and motorcycles, a Depression-era “wall of death”, and throngs of people in period-correct helmets, goggles, and gear. What you actually stepped into is “The Race of Gentlemen”, a classic hot-rod racing event which gathers all of the tinkerers and racers who exclusively build and run old-fashioned crank sports cars and big, unwieldy 30’s and 40’s motorcycles in an attempt to hark back to bygone time where beaches were the only place to have a proper amateur race.
