The first Civic Type-R available in the U.S. is not what you would call subtle. Its wild design is like a 16 year old’s dreams the night he first saw “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.” In addition to the giant wing and exaggerated lines, the Type-R has three pipes coming out of the back.

Why three? Two of the exits are the normal exhaust, and the middle pipe is believed to open up only in certain situations and could effectively be a straight pipe for maximum horsepower. Does it open over a certain RPM? When in “+R” mode? No one is sure yet, but what is absolutely clear is that the sounds it makes are awesome.

Honda’s are not known for great noises, though that is mostly the fault of aftermarket “tuners” ruining the exhaust. But this Civic absolutely backs up its shouty looks with an equally loud grumble.
