Between the end of the Second World War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia was scrambling for a military edge in any way possible. After extensive study of ground effect vehicles, the military commissioned the massive Erkanoplan. The top secret project had them construct several of these hulking planes so that they could eventually fit them with nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, the gigantic planes were costly to build and had a very limited usage, and thus became a serious boondoggle over time.
