The Three Gorges Dam in China’s Hubei Province is one of the largest manmade structures in the world and to ensure that ships can navigate the Yangtze River and pass through the nearly 170-meter dam, engineers unveiled the world’s largest ship elevator. With a wet dock base attached to dozens of rows of industrial cabling, the elevator slowly moves upward over the course of 40 minutes, where it opens up to the raised river on the other side.
