Watch what a NASCAR stock car can really do without restrictions

If you missed your chance to buy an old stock car, prepare to kick yourself even harder when you see what a retired NASCAR can do when unrestricted by those pesky rules, or turns. The Nevada Department of Transportation is possibly the coolest Dot in the country, because once a year they shut down 90 miles of SR 318 to allow people a perfectly legal way to find the top speed of their cars.

It is called the Silver State Classic and a 2006 Dodge stock car stole the show. The retired NASCAR posted an average of 217 MPH but the real eye-popping number was its trap speed of 243 MPH. Drivers couldn't dream of those speeds on the track due to restrictor plates and the fact that trying to corner at those speeds would be pretty sketchy.
