The Porsche/Audi 917/30 Can Am race car is one of the meanest competition cars ever built. It’s 5.4-liter flat V12 with twin turbochargers can pull down nearly 1600 horses at full boost. The German collaboration blew the lid off the American Can Am series due to the fact that the big block Chevy engines which dominated the race were barely keeping up at just over 700 horses. The 917/30’s lighter frame and body, in addition to its sleek aerodynamic profile kept it on top of its downforce, managing a much finer racing than its heavier, beefier competitors. It’s not often one gets to stand next to such a champion of automotive history.
