The Petty family racing business is moving into the next generation, at least the driving part.

Thad Moffitt, the grandson of Richard Petty, made his Daytona racing debut driving in an ARCA Racing Series test session on Friday, according to nbcsport.com. The 17-year-old Moffitt is the son of Rebecca Petty-Moffitt and is in his second season of ARCA racing. Richard Petty Motorsports tweeted the news.

Moffitt made three starts last year, with a best finish of 11th at the O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis.

Moffitt drives the #46 for Empire Racing, a driver development team for Richard Petty Motorsports. He's expected to make three starts in 2018, the first being the February 10th ARCA race at Daytona. If Moffitt makes the start, he will be the first Petty to race at Daytona since his uncle Kyle in the Rolex 24 in 2009.
