Jeff Gordon says this young gun just has to let the race come to him and the wins will follow

I think we're all feeling it's only a matter of time for Chase Elliott to get his first Cup win, but four-time NASCAR Cup champion Jeff Gordon says he hopes Elliott isn't pressing too hard to get that win.

"I hope he doesn't change too much, just fine-tune. He was working hard on restarts and he's improved on those," Gordon told autosport.com. "He needs to put together a complete race and breakthrough. Once he does, a lot more wins are coming soon."

Gordon says he sees a lot of similarities between Elliott's struggles and Jimmie Johnson trying to win his first Cup championship. Johnson finished 2nd in both 2003 and 2004 and then 5th in 2005 before breaking through to win five Cup championships in a row.

"The same thing will happen with Chase, he's currently in the mindset of 'what do I have to do to win' instead of 'I'm going to this race and I'm going to win," Gordon said. "Once he breaks through - and when you're that good on a short track, intermediate, superspeedways, all of them - it's a matter of time."

Elliott has run in 77 Cup races, finishing 2nd seven times.
