One of the bigger, under the radar stories of this season involves whether NASCAR might change is tire supplier and move away from Goodyear.
The buzz picked up steam when IMSA, the International Motor Sports Association, decided to change its tire supplier to Michelin from Continental.
But, according to USAToday, Goodyear expects to re-up, and believes an agreement is imminent.
“We have not finalized the agreement yet; that’s true,” Grant told the newspaper. “We’re getting very close to a contract extension. But we are testing for 2018, we’re getting ready to build tires for the Daytona 500. We’re operating like we’re going to be here in 2018.”
Goodyear has supplied tires to NASCAR since 1954, and has been the sport’s exclusive provider since 1997. Goodyear’s five-year contract expires at the end of the year.
Goodyear is coming off two tires tests — September 26 at Bristol and last week at Charlotte — and after Charlotte, the drivers involved gave their seal of approval.Martin Truex Jr., Daniel Hemric, Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray.
“It was unanimous among the drivers in terms of what setup to pick, and it’s always nice to leave a test when everyone agrees on the same tires,” Grant said. “Unless (NASCAR or the track) they reconfigure it and make a major change, we’re good to go.”
