Much of the talk revolving around NASCAR right now is focused on whether the sport's top drivers can find sponsorship for next season, but there's one NASCAR champion who's looking to return to the Cup Series before 2017 comes to a close.
On Oct. 15th, driver Alon Day claimed his first NASCAR Whelen Euro Series championship after finishing fourth at Circuit Zolder. This championship performance came after finishing second and third in the point standings the previous two seasons.
"After three years of trying and every year, I'm always so close. It's definitely an amazing feeling," said Day, according to The Front Stretch. "I feel relief for the team. They're trying the same amount as me, and we work really hard. That's the first NASCAR championship for my team, and they were almost crying."
Don't expect Day to take a vacation to celebrate though. The 26-year-old is already focused on another race and it's stateside.
Having previously raced in the Cup Series at Sonoma back in June, Day could find himself driving in the First Data 500 at Martinsville Speedway this weekend if he finds sponsorship in time. That's according to Miami based attorney David Levin who advocates for Day.
With his championship-clinching run this past Sunday, Day became the first Israel-native to win a NASCAR title and he plans to use that achievement to his advantage.
"It's not opening doors, but it's making those doors easier to open," Day said. "It's a signature that I'm a good driver, so I'm pretty sure it's going to be a bit easier for David to try and get sponsors for the U.S."
