It's another week and time for NASCAR random thoughts, and there was a lot to think about
Carl Edwards seems really content off the track
Sure, he shocked the NASCAR world when he suddenly quit the sport last year, and he's still only 38. But Edwards seems like he's a happy, happy man, and has no intention of racing again. There's another side to this though -- even if he wanted to come back, could he? With NASCAR getting younger -- and cheaper -- there may not be any room for someone like Edwards, even though he's s star. In the end, we'll probably never know, because it sure sounds like he's done.
Danica Patrick just doesn't have the passion to race anymore
That the reason, she said, she walked away from the sport. That makes sense. Why stay in NASCAR, racing toward the middle (if she's lucky) when she can pay attention to her business ventures? As big as she was in NASCAR, she's going to be far, far bigger as a brand, and someone that can act as a role model for women everywhere. Will NASCAR fans miss her? Sure. But what she's about to do has a chance to have a wide ranging impact that we don't see yet.
Ryan Truex gets a ride, but ...
Man NASCAR has gotten tough. Ryan Turex lost his truck series ride through no fault of his own. So he picks up an Xfinity ride with Kaulig Racing, but that means Blake Koch gets bumped from the team to make way. Koch was all class talking about the situation, so here's hoping he can find another ride. The sponsorship issues are daunting everywhere, and unfortunately, good drivers are getting caught in it. Just ask Koch, and Jeffrey Earnhardt.
Quick hits:
- Danica Patrick and Aaron Rodgers are reportedly "serious." If she doesn't get rides for Daytona and Indy, they'll have more time to spend together (?).
- The wrongful death civil lawsuit filed against Tony Stewart may go to trial in May. Three years of settlement talks have gone nowhere.
- Brendan Gaughan is going to drive in four restrictor plate races this season. Great to see him on the track.
- Chip Ganassi Racing says it won't offer Danica Patrick rides at Daytona and Indianapolis because the team wants to focus on its own drivers. Makes sense. Why divert precious resources for a one-time effort?
- NASCAR wants to add at least one, preferably two, manufacturers to the field. Dodge and ... who?
- Jeffrey Earnhardt may have found an "incredible opportunity" but he needs sponsorship. Let's hope he gets it.
- Ryan Blaney cut his hair. Never thought that would be such a thing.
- Kasey Kahne seems a lot more relaxed with Leavine Family Racing, and that could very well lead to a big year.
