A new chemical process has allowed scientists to become virtual alchemists. Using a catalyst, scientists were able to break the long double-bonded carbon chains and dissolve them out of old plastic water bottles and shopping bags. The No. 2 and No. 6 types of plastics reduced down into alkane oil products with a waxy byproduct. This waxy byproduct can be sold off to create resins and such, whereas the catalyst can be reused for another reaction. The alkane oil products can be used to create diesel fuel. This discovery could revolutionize both plastic recycling and diesel fuel production the world over.
