One of the reasons so many states have statutes on the books against police pursuing suspects in high speed chases is that stopping one by force can be just as deadly as potentially allowing it to continue. The development team behind the “Grappler” system hopes to change all that by offering a pursuit-ending solution in the form of a front-mounted web of industrial strength tiedowns which can be launched at the rear wheels of a suspect vehicle, ensnaring the tire and allowing the police vehicle to essentially capture the vehicle it is pursuing and bring it to a halt using its own brakes. While Stopsticks and spike strips do have precedent in the field, they also make the fleeing vehicle generally loose control as a result of the exploded tires, where the Grappler holds the wheel in place and locks the chase down instead.
