For the hybrid electric motor and combustion engine power plant inside a Koenigsegg Regera, engineers at Koenigsegg had a unique problem when it came to developing a transmission that would not cut into their engine’s power and acceleration potential. Traditional torque converters found in automatic cars would not function with their new tech without compromising the performance of the engine, which forced Koenigsegg to develop its own multi-function hydraulic torque converter they call the “Direct Drive.” Enhancing an older design of turbine powered torque converter in this way allowed them to essentially delete the traditional gearbox in favor of a system that allows the car to perfectly access all of its power from any speed.
