Eyewitnesses in downtown Indianapolis reported a Tesla sedan travelling at a supremely high rate of speed down Illinois Street, just before it struck a tree outside a parking garage and exploded into flames. Firefighters quickly responded to the crash scene, where the Tesla was already completely engulfed by fire from the battery pack. Rescuers declared the female passenger dead at the scene, and while they were able to extract the male driver from the burning wreckage, he also died en route to treatment. Local news and eyewitnesses stated the debris field from the exploded vehicle stretched for nearly one hundred yards, much of which was on fire. Police are still investigating what caused the fatal crash.
